Report on Forum discussion on CEDAW Concluding observations-1

National level  awareness programme  for public sector officials - Convention on Elimination of all  forms of Discrimination  Against  Women (CEDAW) Beijing  Declaration and  plat from for Action.

Ministry  of Women’s Affairs is the sole  responsible agency on  implementation of  CEDAW and  Beijing declaration and platform for  action  that are ratified by Sri Lanka. One day national  level awareness programme  for public  sector officials on above  convention  was conducted on 29th May 2015 at Sri Lanka foundation institute. Staff officers and other officials from  government Ministries like Education, Health and Indigenous Medicine, Tourism and Sports, Power and Energy, Agriculture, Resettlement , Reconstruction and Hindu Religious Affairs   , Justice ,Land, Civil Aviation and State Ministry  of Youth Affairs  and officers of Ministry of Women’s Affairs including Gender Focal Points  have participated to the workshop. This  workshop  was  organized  by National Committee on Woman , Ministry of Women’s Affairs.

Mrs. Dhara Wijethilaka Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education and Research as a resource person pointed out  CEDAW  reporting and Director, Ministry  of External Affairs, Mr.Chandana Weerasena, brought out the significance of International Conventions. Mrs.Swarna Sumanasekara ,Chairperson  NCW highlighted the Beijing declaration and platform  for action. Moreover, significance of CEDAW  is indicated by Mrs.Sairini Siriwardana of United Nations.  Mrs.Sudharma Karunarathna, Secretary to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs focused the attention towards CEDAW , requirement to formulate project  on Beijing  declaration and receiving financial  assistance  to aforesaid projects. And also  requested to make aware  senior officials of  the relevant  Ministries about this workshop. Open discussion was carried out  with participants at  the  end.



United Nation’s CEDAW Expert, Vice-Chair of CEDAW Committee Mrs. Pramila Patten visited the Ministry on  13th January 2016 and participated at a discussion organized by National Committee on Women which was Chaired by the Secretary of Ministry of Women & Child Affairs Mrs. Chandrani Senarathne. In addition to the Heads of the Ministry the Country Director of FOKUS & her Officers also participated at the discussion.

Mrs. Patten explained the importance of CEDAW Reporting and specially focused on providing information on war affected women.

She also emphasized on CEDAW comments in the Ministry’s Work Plan. She mentioned that organizing a mocking session is important prior to Sri Lankan Report taking up next year. Eighth periodic report will be reviewed by the Committee on July this year and the comments on the report will be dispatched and the reporting country has to send further information on the matters raised.
